Hotel Tonight is a great app that gets you dirt cheap fares for last minute bookings, and you can stay at fantastic hotels right in the heart of the city, especially near Rittenhouse Square
It's such a walkable city, only 2 miles from river to river, but the Septa lines are great to if you're looking to get somewhere quickly.
1. Walk along Kelly Dr and Boathouse Row towards the Art Museum.
2. Walk along the Ben Franklin Parkway to check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art and City Hall even if just from the outside.
3. Rittenhouse Square. Beautiful part of the city buzzing with people and tons of amazing food. The Dandelion, Parc, a.kitchen, Joe Coffee and shopping all over.
4. Independence National Historical Park for the history. Sneak up to Stratus Rooftop Lounge for a cocktail.
5. Old City to walk around and eat/shop. Elfreth's Alley, The Franklin Fountain, Panorama, Han Dynasty, Amada, Capofitto, Khyber Pass Pub, Zahav. Swing by Spruce Street Harbor Park

I really love the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District in Old City. Perfect location and easy walking distance to Center City, Rittenhouse Square, Reading Terminal Market, and the best cheesesteaks (Jim's Steaks) on South Street. For a more affordable option, you can also check out the Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel. Not as centrally located, but still an easy walk to Center City.
Philly is super walkable, but you can also catch any of the local buses, metros and trolley's to get you where you need to go. I've never had to use those hop-on, hop-off buses, but there are plenty of those as well.
Favorite places to eat (other than cheesesteaks) are El Vez (for great mexican, especially the goat cheese guacamole), The Plough & the Stars (for breakfast), and Amada (for amazing tapas.. get the shortrib flatbread !)
And while you're in town, try to catch a show at Theatre of The Living Arts, Union Transfer, or The Mann Center ! Hope you enjoy your trip :)
