8 hour layover in Panama City. Where to go?

I have an 8 hour layover in Panama City, Panama.

I've been to Panama before, so I have toured around Casco Viejo before.

I'm much more curious about the modern Panama. Is it safe to walk around? Any hotels or restaurants where I could lunch and lounge for a couple of hours?

I was thinking of taking an Uber, what do you think?

I do recommend using Uber in Panama. Regular taxis will hike up the fare to foreigners from the USA, Canada and Europe...unfair but they think you are rich if from those areas. https://www.uber.com/cities/panama-city

I am glad you have seeing Casco Viejo. I was born in that community and love it. The modern areas should be safe to tour around. Go to Avenida Balboa and take a stroll. There's a walkway for bikes and people along the water. You will be in the banking district of the city. There's no shade so have a bottle of water or you can buy a raspado (shaved ice with fruit flavor and sweet condensed milk drizzled on top) from a vendor along the way. Take an Uber taxi to La Rana Dorada which has a great menu and drinks :) It's in El Cangrejo where you can walk about easily and can find interesting shops. From that area you can walk to the Iglesia del Carmen which is a very pretty gothic church and good for pictures. From there you can use Uber again to go to Costa del Este another modern area in the city and tell the driver to leave you near shops... or head to Tocumen Airport if short on time.

    Enjoy :)

Have you already been to the Panama Canal? If not, it's easy to grab a taxi out to the Miraflores Locks, you only need a few hours to do the museum, watch the ships, etc. I would suggest taxis over uber, just because they are very cheap in Panama City. Also, I would say the downtown, modern part of Panama city is safe to walk around, much safer than Casco Viejo, in fact. There are some nice restaurants with big outdoor decks where you could easily lounge for a drink.

    Hello Maria Jose,

I love Panama City (Panama)!! However, Since you have 8 hours only, I will suggest that You go straight to Calz de Amador or Causeway, it runs 6km out into the bay, linking the mainland with 3 tiny islands. It is popular cause people come here to walk, run, jog, etc. At the end of the causeway you will find a variety of nice restaurants. The view is also spectacular. I will also add a walk by Casco Viejo as it is the historic area of Panama City. There is a nice restaurant Mostaza located in 3rd street and avenue A. If you have time (it is pretty close to Casco Viejo) take 15 minutes to walk by the Cinta Costera as it is located just in front of the financial district of Panama. There are many restaurants, hotels where you can have lunch or dinner. I can recommend Athens Pizza, located on 'calle 50' and Obarrio. There is another nice restaurant at the Trump Ocean Club or the Hard Rock Hotel Panama Megapolis is another nice place to visit.

    Enjoy it!

Like any big city, there are bound to be it's good and bad parts but with that being said, always be aware of your surroundings and stay where there are lots of people/tourists! A really good Italian restaurant to try out is Caffè Pomodoro.
