Running of the Bulls for first timers

Where is the best place to post when it is your first time running with the bulls? Any tips from any people who have done it before are much appreciated.

Okay, where to start. It is early, the running is at 8am, so you need to get where you want to be no later than 7am, they close down the route and cops do not take kindly you you trying to jump across the road. You can post on a street (there is a nice section near deadman's corner, just before it). You can see some good action there, or right near the begining of the course there are plenty of fence lines that you can hang out at.

If you choose to hang out on the fence line, know that there are two fences, the inside fence which keeps the bulls on path and the outside fence that keep the people out, the space in between is where runners dive to when they want to get out of the way. Sit on the outside fence - cops will make you move if you are on the inside fence and then you will likely be screwed and have no where to watch it.

The other option is spring for a balcony - they cost about $100-125 per person but they come with great views, often times breakfast and they are pamplonian homes. You will always have a great view and less shoving, puking, foul smelling people (because many have been up drinking all night and sleeping in the street/). Check out I used them last year and it was great. I strongly considered running the second day, but I chose to ensure having fun since it was at the beginning of my 3 week vacation.

Once thing for you to note, the entire old town is filled with garbage, piss, booze, etc. It is a great scene but is pretty nasty in the main areas of old town. Just wear close toed shoes and NEVER flip flops - I saw many people in flip flops not too happy.

Make sure you also buy white pants/shorts and plan on getting rid of them when you leave - you will likely be covered in sangria/beer/wine/kalimotxo. Happy to answer any questions about this as it is still fresh in my mind.

Go to a bullfight if you can there are tons of scalpers on the way to the arena. It may be difficult to watch, but it gives you great appreciation for the culture. First bull in the ring = last bull to fight. Last bull in the ring = first bull to fight and so on.
