Best free things to do in Ottawa?

I'm going to be in Ottawa next month and will be on a pretty tight budget. I'm looking for the best free and inexpensive things to check out! I love the outdoors, art, museums, you name it. Thanks!

Admission to the National Gallery of Canada and all museums are free on Thursdays. The Supreme Court of Canada offers free tours by law students and a tour of the parliament buildings is also free.

There are awesome hiking trails about 20 minutes from Ottawa in Gatineau. The Luskville trail is a great hike and Mackenzie King Station is a great place to check out in the fall! The Byward Market is a cool place to check out and they have a farmer's market at Landsdown Developments Ltd every weekend.

You'll find cheap tacos just about anywhere in the city but El Camino has arguably the best in Ottawa. Also if there's a RedBlacks game going on you can usually catch them through the fence on the hill and Lansdowne without paying for a ticket.

Enjoy your stay!

Downtown is pretty small. You can check out the byward market. Lots of little interesting shops to browse, and outdoor market, lots of restaurants. There's parliament hill right downtown which is great for a free tour or pictures. Thursday evenings from 5-8 you can see the museum of nature for free. If the weather is nice I also suggest visiting the governor general's residence in rockcliffe park. Beautiful grounds and lots of history. They have trees planted by famous visiting presidents/prime ministers.

Tour of the Parliament of Canadas is free but get there early, tickets go fast. The Canada Aviation and Space Museum is pretty neat place, and not very expensive.

If you want to go around in Ottawa on a tight budget, there's a few things you must know :) Every Thursday is 'Free Museum Thursday'. The average price for a museum (with exposition) is 15$. There is usually a free Light Show happening on the Parliament Hill, but I'm afraid you will have to look at the schedule for October because the present one ends September 12th. There is a few city tour buses that you could take that start close to the Parliament Hill. Other than that, if possible, rent a car and explore other parts of Ottawa. The Gatineau Region (including the Canadian Museum of History and the Gatineau Park) is really pretty during the Fall!

I hope this helped to squeeze a few things in your tight budget :)
