You can easily pass by New Orleans to the north and still stay on I-10. there is a hurricane forming in the gulf right now (prob what you are referring to) I would try to avoid driving through there, stay West of a Houston until Sunday night at least and you see how much damage. Possibly book ahead on bookings.com because it could be hard to find something half decent if you wait and make sure you have the option to cancel the day before, sometime that is offered
