Valerie from Los Angeles asked

Best free things to do in Omaha?

I'm going to be in Omaha next month and will be on a pretty tight budget. I'm looking for the best free and inexpensive things to check out! I love the outdoors, art, museums, you name it. Thanks!

Hey Valerie! There are some pretty good places depending on where you are staying. You might like the Joslyn Art Museum, which a actually a free, very popular museum here.

Spending some time downtown is usually a favorite because it's a quaint area in the old market, especially if you like art and good food. You won't need to spend much. Great places to eat: Modern Love is my newest favorite. Even if you aren't vegan, it's amazing. Created by internationally famous Isa Chandra Marcowitz. Lots and lots of good restaurants here. Check out Lauritzen Gardens. If you like adventure. There's a place that's not far 20-30min called Mt Crescent Ski Area where they do ziplines (only $25), then there are also some horseback riding places near there also. There's a lot of fun things to do here. Some good resources are Omahype.com or visitomaha.com. Have fun!

Omaha is known for the worlds best Henry Doorly Zoo. But it does cost. Free things to do... I always go here and look http://www.visitomaha.com/things-to-do/free-things-to-do/#.VYCP-7bZWMo

The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is cool to walk over and go downtown to check out the old market, cute little shops and things.

If you like good comedy shows, I recommend going to The Backline. It's downtown and pretty cheap for a night of entertainment. They have shows Thursday's-Sunday's. Most shows are improv comedy, but they have stand-up comedy on occasion too.

You definitely will want to visit the Gene Leahy Mall at The RiverFront in downtown Omaha. It has just been remade and is a beautiful spot to walk, people watch, play, etc.

Go to The Old Market and look around. Lots of shops and food. The Henry Doorly Zoo isn't too far from there. Not free, but one of the top zoos in the world, you can spend a lot of time there!

The Joslyn Art Museum has free admission which is nice. It is always enjoyable to go walk around The Old Market, or walk the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge over the Missouri river to Iowa. Admission the The Durham Museumis not too bad about $11. The website familyfuninomaha.com has a list of free activities to do in town, they are fun for everyone. It lists all sorts of nature trails and hiking area etc. Enjoy yourself.
