My husband and I are traveling to Oberwesel and are leaving out of Koblenz on a Rhine River Cruise. I can't seem to find a train that time of the morning. The cruise will end in Rudesheim and will then need to get back to Oberwesel.....on the other side of the river. Is this even doable?
Always use the official German railway website in English to find train times, details and fares:
There are departures from Oberwesel to Koblenz at 0626 (and earlier), 0649, 0716, 0725 and later. This is a direct journey (you do not need to change trains) and journey time is just under 40 minutes. Nor do you need to buy your tickets in advance online. Just buy them from the station ticket machine (which will have English language options). Just buy your ticket the day before if you are worried about hassle early in the morning! :-)
It is entirely possible to get from Rudesheim am Rhein back to Oberwesel. The DB site I linked above will give you details. Type 'Ruedesheim' to get the option of 'Rüdesheim(Rhein)'.
There are plenty of departure options, quite a few of which include taking a boat ('Schiff') for all or part of the journey. These boats do not run every day (some, for example, only run Mon > Fri) so do check that aspect. But don't panic...there are non-boat options too!
Journey time varies according to which option and time you choose, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The latest departure Rudesheim > Oberwesel is at 2253, arriving at 0038, so you really don't need to worry about getting back! :-)
