Valerie from Los Angeles asked

Can't miss things to do in and around Kailua?

I'm visiting O'ahu for the first time and will be staying in Kailua. What are the can't miss activities on that side of the island? Best beaches, hikes, sites to see? I'm extremely adventurous and open to all suggestions. Just looking for the best things to see and explore. Thanks!

Will come back again and update later tonight but if you don't mind saying around when you will be visiting I can suggest certain upcoming events that you might not want to miss while you are. Like the Prince Lot Hula Festival 7/18 to 7/19 or the Kailua Hongwanji Bon Dance 7/25, etc.

  • Moiliili Summer Fest though this is in town this event is one the biggest things happening the weekend you are here. Its a really big bon dance with choke vendors like Aloha Pops, Kau Kau Grill, & Waimanalo Country Farms. There is parking at the college up the road with shuttles to event.
  • Kāne‘ohe Higashi Hongwanji Bon Dance will be taking place on Friday. Basically bon dances started as a Japanese Religious/Cultural event but has become more of a relaxed community event with people of all different ethnic groups coming out to enjoy the Japanese music and to dance while enjoying good food.

HIKING: I don't hike but the Kailua Chamber of Commerce has a page on their site explaining the different hiking options in Kailua.

BEACHES: I would suggest going during the week in the morning or afternoon while the locals are at work. Stay away from Lanikai Beach, Kailua Beach and Waimanalo Beach during the weekends because those places are SUPER packed especially after Waimanalo Beach being listed as the best beach in the US. Also make sure not to leave any valuables in your car and to keep an eye on them at all times. Also DO NOT swim near the mouth of streams after heavy rains and if the water is brown/dark with bad visibility.

Thanks Michael! I'm heading out next Wednesday and will be there over 4th of July weekend. Would love it if you could update :) I'm sure it's going to be packed regardless since it's a holiday weekend.

It's not so much the part about being packed (which it will be) but people on here like to suggest Lanikai Beach which has been super congested. What some people don't know is that the state in it's brilliance removes parking on long weekends sometimes and patrol the other areas that are illegal to park in so tourists end up with parking tickets.

Nice suggestions Michael!

Did the guided tour with Twogood Kayak and really enjoyed it.  Felt very comfortable and safe.  Walked around the island and got very close to the nesting sea birds!  Not to far from there is Kualoa Tours, enjoyed the movie tour and saw several locations of movies like Jurassic Park, Godzilla, Pearl Harbor, etc.  The views of the Ko'olau mountain range is quite spectacular. Valley of the Temples Memorial Park and Byodo-In Temple are very peaceful.
