Jordyn from New York City asked

Best outdoorsy activities for a fall trip to the Outer Banks, N.C.?

My boyfriend's family and I are spending a week in North Carolina's Outer Banks this September. We're all in fairly good shape, and enjoy spending time outside. Does anyone have recommendations for great outdoorsy activities in the area — maybe a great hiking or biking route? Thanks!

North Carolina (NC)   Hatteras (North Carolina)   Buxton (North Carolina)   Manteo (North Carolina)   Nags Head (North Carolina)   Kitty Hawk (North Carolina)   Kill Devil Hills (North Carolina)   Duck (North Carolina)   Corolla (North Carolina)

Hi Jordyn,

The Outer Banks are fabulous in September.  No crowds, weather is good. You don't mention exactly where you will be (the Outer Banks are vast) but here are some thoughts:

  • Rent ocean kayaks
  • Do some hang gliding at Jockeys Ridge State Park
  • If you are on the northern part of the Outer Banks (up around Duck or even Corolla there are miles of bike trails along the Sound.  Also up there you can take a vehicle on the beach and look out for the wild horses.
  • At the end of a full day, the best activity may be simply sitting or walking at the waters edge, just doing nothing but watching the ocean and sky.

Have a wonderful trip!
