Hi friends,
I will be travelling to NZ, starting from Auckland, this coming August with a friend for 1 week and this will be my first time visiting NZ. It's kinda short stay though.
May I ask for recommended places to visit and any information of budget accommodation?
I am not into fancy hotel - so preferable more local stay. And I am looking for scenic places and probably local culture. :)
Thank you. :)
If you feel adventurous on a sunny day I would highly recommend taking a ferry from the city across to Rangitoto Island :) You don't need to book in advance and its a beautiful iconic place (make sure you head around the base of the mountain first instead of straight up the main track with the other tourists). Otherwise, a ferry across to Devonport on a sunny day for an ice cream is nice to get out on the water and some great photos of the city!
Definitely stay at Brown Kiwi Hostel. Best hostel in town and close to Ponsonby. My fav area in town. Lots of great coffee shops like Fred's, Conch. Fine Dining and great bars as well!

I had good luck with backpackers (hostels). Best option for budget travel. There is a very big one in Wellington. I also stayed in Dorset House Backpackers Hostel (I also went on a day-trip to Littleton Harbor (Hector dolphin watching). It was great location near the Redwoods, but before the quake.
Also stayed in Packers Rotorua, I like culture and history so this a had place of interest.
Some of my favorite places in Auckland:

hi in New Zealand there are some hostels worth a stay . I would recommend to extend your stay & check out Queenstown & or Christchurch . On short trip you could try whitewater trip , bungee or zorbing ..
