Hi Jeffrey, I did Wanaka , Franz Josef, Hokitika, Greymouth, Christchurch, Kaikoura, Blenheim, Marlborough wine country, Nelson and finally to Picton for 10 days.
If you have just 4 days, I think your best bet would be from Wanaka to Franz Josef (1 night) to Nelson (2 nights) and finally to Picton . If you want the Kaikoura route, you'll probably have to travel from Wanaka to Kaikoura via Christchurch. Wanaka to Christchurch by car or on the Tranz Alpine train. Overnight in Christchurch. Then drive from Christchurch to Kaikoura . Stay 2 nights in Kaikoura and off to Picton.
Make sure you check out Tekapo, and if your on time a winery in Marlborough... Also if Akaroa, is possible its beautiful... Enjoy!
Jeffrey Thanks Joel. We land in Christchurch so will do Akaroa day one. We are in Wanaka for a week and intend to get to Tekapo during tht week. We have the winery as a must and we also have Kaikora as a definite.
Hi, if you want to head east towards Christchurch & Akaroa you will have to head towards Queenstown first, you won't have time for a visit to Queenstown or Milford Sound though. I would suggest the west coast, it's a stunning drive. There are lots of great places inbetween Wanaka & Picton. Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, Hokitika is a wee gem and has a glow worm dell, this is where greenstone is found and there are lots of opportunities to buy some realy nice artisan peices, do be mindful of buying NZ greenstone and not Chinese or Canadian jade, nothing wrong with it, just not authenticly Kiwi! Arthur's Pass is a great drive and will get you headed towards Kaikoura. If you're intending to go whale watching, be mindful that the trips are often cancelled so you should allow 2 days if you really really want to do this. Wanaka to Franz, Fox or Hokitika is a solid day driving. Any of these to Kaikoura is another solid day driving. Queenstown to Akaroa or Chch is another solid day too. Kaikoura to Picton is pretty much a full day also. Fergburger in Queenstown seconded! Kaikoura Seafood BBQ Kiosk up towards Seal Swim Kaikoura is another firm local favourite. Don't worry about having time to spend in Picton, it's a nice little town but not a great deal to do.
Jeffrey Many thanks Nardine. We will have been to Akaroa as we land in Christchurch and will make that our first day. We are in Wanaka for a week and will spend some time in Queenstown during that. The west coast and Arthur's pass look great and the warning regarding potential cancellations for the whale wathing is appreciated. Thanks again. Jeff. .
Nardine NO problem Jeff, hope you have a wonderful time, don't hesitate to ask any more questions, happy to help!
