Christchurch and Queenstown - advice on best things to do?

My friend and I are going to take 5 days to travel between Christchurch and Queenstown, and we currently have no plans. Any advice on towns or activities to experience along the way. We are both in our mid-20's and love adventure and meeting people.

Enjoy "star-watching" at Lake Tekapo where you can see Southern Cross with massive Milky Way. Also, I recommend visiting the Otago Peninsula, Dunedin. Colonies of Yellow-Eyed-Penguins and Royal Albatross are great places to see!!

My suggestion would be to travel across Arthur's Pass, visit with the cheeky Kea parrots in the township, take a walk to Devil Punchbowl Falls. Stop off for the night at Hokitika  - famous for greenstone, beautiful rugged beach, glow worm dell, Hokitika Gorge.

Next day drive down to Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier famous for the glaciers (obviously). hotpools (not natural) at Franz & Lake Matheson at Fox

Then take the full day drive down the west coast along coast roads and through temperate rain forests, drive between the great lakes  to Wanaka (Long 6 to 8 hour drive). For something a bit different visit Puzzling World :)

Then head over Crown Range Road to Queenstown.

I did this trip a couple of years ago and it was busy.... but beautifully breath taking

Hi,

The one place I stopped over, for two days,
on my way from Christchurch to Queenstown was Tekapo. Not only is  Lake Tekapo , but the Mount John University Observatory was a great experience. You could also Hike up the Southern Alps or take an Air Safari, the view is amazing.

Christchurch isn't all that greets cut that short, Queenstown  has my heart!  Pass through arrow town, have lunch or a cheese plate at Gibbston Valley Winery. Amazing meat in this region, lamb and beef particularly.  Lots of restaurants and bars in Qtwn but also for adrenalin junkies, downhill mountain biking in town just pop your bike on the bubble or from coronet peak.  Vudu Café & Larder is a must for hungover brekky, eggs benedict is epic. Fergburger for drunken munchies.  Winnie's pizza for pizza. Harrys Nelson Restaurant & Bar for pool. Barmuda for swanky cocktails in front of the fire in the courtyard and pumping sat nights.
