Best places to go camping in NY?

I'm planning a two day camping trip with several friends of mine (all from the Westchester area). We're looking for somewhere that offers good fishing and hiking. Ideally that isn't more then a 3 hour drive from Westchester.

Where would you recommend we go?

I am a big fan of Phoenicia, NY, which is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from New York City. There are traditional campgrounds like Phoenicia Black Bear Campground or more modern lodging like Kate's Lazy Meadow Motel airstream trailors, and The Graham & Co., a minimalism motel-turned-cabin with city attitude. The town has a fantastic little pancake spot called Sweet Sue's and a great menu at the Phoenicia Diner, as well as a bunch of food quality shops, cafes and restaurants in nearby Woodstock (New York). If you go in late summer, you can still take advantage of river tubing at Town Tinker Tube Rental as well.

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Woodstock (New York) (city)
  2. Phoenicia Black Bear Campground (attraction)
  3. The Graham & Co. (hotel)
  4. Kate's Lazy Meadow Motel (hotel)
  5. Sweet Sue's (restaurant)
  6. Town Tinker Tube Rental (attraction)
  7. Phoenicia Diner (restaurant)
