New York City's best bakeries?

Saw an awesome question on the best bakeries in SF, and now i'm curious what the best ones are in NYC?

Going to be there for a weekend and staying in East Village but willing to explore other areas if it's worth it!

It depends on what you're looking to eat! While you are in the East Village Momofuku Milk Bar is worth checking out for their Crack Pie and Cereal Milk. While you are out exploring, Levain Bakery has amazing cookies, Dominique Ansel Bakery known for the infamous cronuts have other unique pastries and Parisian treats, Lady M Cake Boutique has multiple locations and the delicious layered crepe cake. Last but not least Clinton St. Baking Company is worth the wait, so get there early!

Two words: Molly's Cupcakes. I recently had the Cookie Monster with a chocolate chip cookie on top and cookie dough in the center. So. GOOD. Momofuku Milk Bar is really interesting, but delicious. They do some really interesting concoctions that you won't find anywhere else, like the compost cookie. The cereal milk ice cream is fun, but I feel like it's a novelty. The crack pie is amazing. Also, as mentioned below, Dominique Ansel Bakery

This recommendation in not a bakery per se, but it has amazing baked goods on the first floor of the art museum referenced in the movie "Woman in Gold."  We stop in mid-afternoon for dessert only. The museum Neue Galerie New York has on the first floor the Cafe Sabarsky. The linzer torte and apple strudel rank among the best pastries you will find.  If you have a bit of time to sit and savor, this is the place.

  1. Neue Galerie New York (attraction)
  2. Cafe Sabarsky (restaurant)

Bouchon Bakery (two locations)- their Koign Aman is amazing if you can get it (they don't always have them), but even if not, try the nutter butter, the TKOreo and the adult Ho-Ho.  Maison Ladurée (two locations) for macarons and other wonderful treats (a hazelnut chocolate layered item that I can't remember the name of is fantastic), William Greenberg makes a fantastic black and white / halfmoon cookie, Momofuku Milk Bar has a crack pie that's to die for, so is their candy bar pie, and I know it's not a showy high end bakery but a little, local, very inexpensive place called La Delice Pastry Shop Inc has a fantastic Petit Four.  People will rave about Payard, but I personally cannot recommend it.

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Bouchon Bakery (restaurant)
  2. Maison Ladurée (restaurant)
  3. William Greenberg (restaurant)
  4. Momofuku Milk Bar (restaurant)
  5. La Delice Pastry Shop Inc (restaurant)
