Couple of thoughts...in Pittsburgh there's the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, which is plenty kid-friendly, although museum visits are awkward during the pandemic. A great, informal place to stop for food if you like a good fish sandwich is Coleman's Fish Market -- if you're traveling on I-70, you'll pass through Wheeling, WV. Cute little city with interesting antique shops across the street from the little indoor mall where Coleman's is. Just outside Columbus, OH there's the fantastic Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Columbus has a German neighborhood (German Village) with good restaurants. Indianapolis is on your way. It has the amazing The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.
