The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium are both cool places to visit with 12 year olds in New Orleans.
There's an awesome Audubon Zoo also.
City Park is another fun place to visit with 12 year olds. The New Orleans Museum of Art is in city park, but it will depend on what's at the museum to determine whether or not 12 year olds will enjoy that.
