Hi Henry,
I think my family and I have driven the New York City and Atlanta route at least 5 times but most of the time it was a quick 2-day drive. If you're looking for historical spots, I recommend Roanoke, VA, the halfway point, about a 7.5-hour drive from New York City.
VisitRoanoke has a 3-day suggested Roanoke history itinerary that you can follow and these are the museums and historical sites to put on your list: Historic Smithfield Plantation, Salem Museum & Historical Society, Booker T Washington National Monument, Historic Roanoke City Market, and Virginia Museum of Transportation.
While you're there, enjoy your scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Peaks of Otter.
Your drive from Roanoke to your destination, Dallas (Georgia) , GA is around 7 hours.

Thanks Claudia! This is helpful stuff! I had a feeling Roanoke would be a good stop, your info has verified that.
