I have not driven alone in quite some time, and the only advice I can offer is to not try to drive past your awakeness.  Stop when you are sleepy.

This is advice for the commercial drivers of the big rigs that drive cross country.

  • Take plenty of driving breaks, especially while driving cross-country, to help remain alert.
  • Don't fight eye-fatigue. Pull off the road and take a nap. The consequences of falling asleep at the wheel, far outweigh those associated with arriving late.
  • Strictly adhere to commercial driver hour restrictions. By law you cannot exceed 11 continuous hours of driving.

Depending on your stamina (age and fitness), you might stick to the interstates and map out for yourself possible rest stops.  Usually there will be a place at the state line where there is an information stop with restrooms.

There is a lot BORING between here and there. Bring audible books to keep yourself engaged.

There is a lot of junk food too. Might be your thing but be aware.
