I am doing the SOL tour with my 18 year old daughter. We are staying close to Times Square on 9th Avenue. Which is the best way to get to the ferry at Battery Park. Thanks.
R/W train from Times Square (or 49th street) to Whitehall Street is definitely the better subway option. They tend to have less disruptions than the other lines.
You could also take the N or R to Whitehall Street and also the 4 or 5 to Bowling Green as well
Lots of options

The answers given are correct subway is fastest and cheapest but if u don't want to hassle with the subway taxis are plentiful or u could call an Uber
Taxi would be about $15
Don't do taxi at rush hour !
Also you can take the "R" train from Times Squareto Whitehall and that's right off the ferry
MY BAD!!! It's been awhile since I lived on the 1/2/3 - from Times Square, take the subway (2 or 3 train, downtown) to Chambers Street then switch to the 1 (also downtown) to South Ferry. Will let you off a block from the ferry terminal.
The subways have been a real mess in the last year or two -- schedules are pretty screwy. But that's still the most practical way to go. Walk over to 7th Avenue in Times Square and take the IRT #1 local train (not the 2 or 3 express) to the last stop, South Ferry.
(Normally, the 2 and 3 split off at Chambers Street and head off toward Brooklyn. So they don't go to South Ferry. But track construction has messed things up a lot in Manhattan lately, so I could be wrong temporarily.)
Take the number 1 train to battery park and follow the signs to the ferry
Get on the first 5 cars of the #1 train and take it to the last stop South Ferry. Exit the station and you should be minutes from Battery Park.
