There are several good dance clubs in downtown NY.

R Bar is a great club. Big enough to lose someone you don't want to talk to, small enough not to get lost. Great music, dance poles, generous bar. Best on Saturday nights.

La Caverna is fun. Better to get there early (around 11:30). It gets super crowded later in the night. The bar is equipped with good music and usually filled with fun people. There is a downside - it can get pretty packed and hot equating to sweat and bumping.

Central Bar is a late night go-to. Best after 1am. The bar's day job is a sports bar, which it does pretty well. But at night, the floor upstairs turns into awesome dancing grounds. There is a large floor for dancing right by the bar and there are seats on the other side for those who are tired, want to sit, or just chill for dance breaks.

Happy clubbing!

I don't know what you'd consider downtown, or what kind of music you're into, so I'll present three scenarios: By far the swankiest is 230 FIFTH on 20th street in Flatiron. Everything is lush and dark and in the summer they have a roof deck with tall leafy plants, candles everywhere and great views. The roof deck is heated in the winter, but can be booked for private events, so check on social media or call ahead.

If you just want to have a drink and listen to some music, there's a club called Pyramid Club in Alphabet City that I used to sneak into when I was under-aged. They host an 80's new wave night, so a lot of people dress up and get silly, plus the drinks are actually enormous. It's a fun crowd, but not for everyone.

This is a total wild card, but if you're feeling very adventurous and you're already downtown, take the L train to Williamsburg and visit Bembe, a really popular with locals Latin dance club. It attracts a lot of top-tier dancers so you can people watch, or dance yourself.

If you catch Irving Plaza on a good night it can be a lot of fun. Depends on who's playing. This isn't small but you might want to try the  Boom Boom Room. It can be a little bit of a scene, but it's fun and the people watching is great. Again, kind of depends on the night.
