Great place to stay in Manhattan that doesn't break the bank. $200/night?

My husband and I are vacationing in NY this summer and want to stay some place nice, boutique-y, romantic, in Manhattan.  Other responses to similar questions feature $600/night places.  Anything just as nice but closer to $200/night?  Is that type place for that budget an oxymoron in Manhattan?

Summer's very hard in NYC. When I was researching on Airbnb a few months out from my trip last year, the prices were very reasonable but they were for winter stays - the cost quickly rose for June.

I've never stayed here but my stepdaughter enjoyed the Pod Hotel - she stayed at the one on 39th but there's one on 51st street too. A queen sized room with ensuite bathroom is around $220 a night on June prices. There's not a lot of space, but for that price point, you wouldn't expect any different.

It really depends on when you go. Summer can be $600 for a place that during the weekday in the winter may be $200. I'd go ahead and book something very soon, as it's likely to get more and more expensive. If you don't need a lot of room and want something that's more on the super-milennial, contemporary side, there's Yotel New YorkKimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group's several properties are fantastic and very boutique and probably what you're looking for, but will likely be a bit more than $200 per night in the summer. Also, as someone noted, Ace Hotel New York is probably in that price range.

I would be very wary of places in NYC at that price point at any other time of year, but you might score something since it's summer time.  The summer is cheaper in NYC for a good reason, it's often times miserably hot and humid.  Maybe $300 is going to give you want you want for romantic and boutique-y.  Try The Carlton Hotel, or 70 Park Avenue: A Kimpton Hotel (or other Kimpton hotels).  They can have good deals.  Another lower cost option is the Ace Hotel New York, make sure they have working A/C.  On the higher end of the $300's, but maybe worth paying a little extra for is Mondrian SoHo.

Slightly depends on your dates!

There's a few boutique-y hotels that may fit the bill (note boutique also means rooms tend to be smaller but nice, especially in Manhattan)

- the Martha Washington (some nights on Hotel Tonight for last minute booking at just $194 a night) - there's also an amazing roman style pizza restaurant inside with the most reasonably priced bottles of champagne (many around 60-80 a bottle)

- the Lex Hotel NYC

Park South Hotel

There's some other deals I've seen for Soho Grand Hotel, the Jade Hotel and Hotel Chandler New York City also for around 180-220 a night. But again those are for last minute bookings on Hotel Tonight.

Awesome answer, Susan! I'm a part of the community team here and I've helped you highlight the places in your answer on a map! In the future, you can do this yourself as you answer a question by simply typing the @-symbol followed by the name of the place. Take a look at that cool map next to your answer :)
