Going to New York in July, and would love to go see a show. What must I see? Any recommendations?

Mary Poppins is by far my favorite. Colorful and fun for everybody, even if English is not your first language.

"The Book of Mormon" at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre is extremely popular. Get your tickets now though, it sells out far in advance. If you're looking for off-broadway, and something easier to get into (and cheaper), then Avenue Q is also a great show.
Also, pro-tip, you can get tickets to a lot of shows for very cheap a couple hours before showtime at the TKTS Theater Development Fund Broadway Ticket Booth but if there's really something in particular you want to see, don't risk doing it that way ;)

Where you looking for Broadway or what??
If so, I would recommend strongly WICKED at the Gershwin Theatre, and if not, The Book Of Mormon at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
You should watch for the lottery tickets in these shows as you can get HUGE discounts two hours before the show, but they are usually PACKED with people competing for the tickets so you may end without anything.

Shakespeare in the Park is the definitive NYC summer theatre experience. http://www.shakespeareinthepark.org/.
while you can buy a tix sometimes. the most authentic experience is to show up early -- say 6 or 7:am with a book, food, water, a blanket and sit on line. you get to talk with new yorkers, sit in the park, see people go by. Folks are friendly and will watch your stuff while you run to the restroom. there are folks renting lawn chairs and loads of food vendors. the earlier you arrive the better the chance of getting a FREE seat. and the Delacorte Theater is not to be missed on a warm summer night. it's just magic to see actors, familiar or not, in new or familiar works. one of the best things about nyc.

The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre Hands down one of the most enjoyable shows. Everyone knows the story, but the stage production and the visuals are spectacular.

Hello Carol! I can see there are a lot of excellent options when talking about shows in/off Broadway (personally I will take Courtney's suggestions next time I visit the city). However, I will recommend you a classic of classics! A must seen show for everyone (not only children but adults)."The Lion King" at the Minskoff Theatre. Another classic which I also enjoyed was The Phanton of the Opera at The Majestic Theatre.

If you really want to see a classic, go for The Fantasticks which is the longest-running musical in the world (literally). It started in a little Off-Broadway theater in 1960 and played until 2002. It's been revived and is playing at the Snapple Theater Center.
A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder at The Walter Kerr Theater (which is one of my favorite theaters) is a pretty hot ticket right now--I haven't seen it yet but I've heard it's great.
Don't forget to check out independent or off-Broadway theaters like La Mama...... or Brooklyn Academy of Music. They put on a lot of great productions that often cost a lot less than a Broadway ticket.
You might want to also check out what the New York Philharmonic is up to. They often have great musical productions at Lincoln Center and they also sell tickets to open rehearsals for a fraction of what a regular performance would cost. You have to be willing to sit through some parts twice or even three times but it's a very interesting process to watch.

I've seen the Broadway play "Wicked" at the Gershwin Theatre. A different twist on the Wizard of Oz witches. The singing was excellent and the acting was superb. I'm going to see it again. Highly recommend. Try to get seats in middle of theatre.

I recently saw Jersey Boys. It is a bit of a "Jukebox" musical, but very fun.

I'm not clear about what you want. Are you interested in going to the theater or seeing a live show such as The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon or The View? Let me know and I can be more specific.
Google NY Broadway Shows to get a full listing w/descriptions of each. You can choose based on the style of music etc you like.
