Roel from Dusseldorf asked

Best NYC area to stay for 5 days in April 2016?

Hi!

Next year April my wife and I (mid-thirties) will be visiting NYC for 5 days. Currently, we are searching for apartments on Airbnb but  choosing an area to stay proofs to be a bit harder than we thought. Please, can you help us in deciding which area to stay?

We'd like to stay in a somewhat more artistic and laid-back area where we can eat great food. We are thinking of either Chelsea, West Village, or SoHo, but we both haven't been to NYC before.

Many thanks!

Your choice of where to stay will depend on your budget. Both West Village and SoHo are fairly expensive. Chelsea (New York) is mid way and East Village may be the most budget friendly. Being downtown, you can get to all of these areas quickly via the subway system. Chelsea has many art galleries, Soho, West Village and East Village have terrific places to eat. Think about going to the Whitney Museum, walk along the High Line Park and enjoy Battery Park

Personally, I'm a big fan of the East Village. Great food, great bars, fun and happening and generally less expensive than the areas you've identified.

Hi! I lived in NYC for ten years and love the East Village It has a lot of restaurants, boutiques, galleries and bars. Lower East Side is a neighborhood with a lot of flavor and you can find interesting places to see. Both of these areas are laid back. If you are not on a budget then Chelsea (New York) SoHo or the  West Village should be fine.

Happy travels!

I like Chelsea, East Village, Soho and Greenwich village.

Midtown is also good but the other areas have more charm.

I'd say you're right, the Chelsea (New York) and West Village areas are the best. Not as mainstream and touristy as midtown Manhattan.
