Breanna, there are some good suggestions here however since you asked in particular, 'Asian inspired cuisines,' I'd steer you towards Mission Chinese (originally from san Francisco).  They are an interesting fusion of East meets West.  I'd go to the location on East Broadway as there are some cool little hangouts within that area (Bacaro, Skál, Forgetmenot, The Fat Radish, etc).

Also check out David Chang's restaurants.  Momofuku Noodle Bar, etc.  You can't go wrong with his restaurants with regards to your request.  Good luck!

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Bacaro (restaurant)
  2. Skál (restaurant)
  3. Forgetmenot (restaurant)
  4. The Fat Radish (restaurant)
  5. Momofuku Noodle Bar (restaurant)

Shanghai Gourmet Inc has the best soup dumplings! It's not a fancy place, but it's so so good. If you're feeling adventurous go to Flushing and follow Serious Eats guide:

It's not fancy but Joe's Shanghai is well regarded as one of the best in the US.  While every other restaurant in china town could be empty there will still be a line at Joe's.  This is not white glove service and you might share a table with strangers but the prices are amazingly cheap and the food is as good as you'll likely ever have.  They're world famous for their soup dumplings.

It's not "classic" Asian food, but to me any of the David Chang restaurants are at the top of the list.  Momofuku Noodle BarMá Pêche among others.  A couple of others are BonChon Chicken has fantastic Korean Fried chicken (get the wings, half spicy half sweet), and Danji for upscale modern Korean.

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Momofuku Noodle Bar (restaurant)
  2. Má Pêche (restaurant)
  3. BonChon Chicken (restaurant)
  4. Danji (restaurant)
