New York City
My friends and I want to take a beach vacation and want to know where the best beach towns in New Jersey are? We don't like crowds of people but prefer smaller, local towns. Anywhere other than Seaside Heights?
Ocean City (New Jersey) has a nice beach and Boardwalk. Nice town too with many great restaurants. I'd stay away from Seaside Heights

Cape May, NJ. If you don't like crowds go during the middle of the week. If you really don't like crowds go during the winter.
Almost all beach towns will be crowded in the summer. Try going during the week to Cape May if you like Victorian. Carneys Point is both good for eating and drinking. They have bands playing starting the end of June. Spring Lake (New Jersey) was quiet when I was there one late summer day.

My go to spot is Avon-by-the-Sea in Belmar. It does not have a robust boardwalk with games and stores, but it has a pavilion for snacks, it is clean, and less crowded. I would also recommend Pier Village Parking Deck in Long Branch for the surrounding restaurants and clean beaches, but it does get crowded at times. If you want something more secluded, check out Island Beach State Park for its private beaches, but swim at your own risk as there are less or no lifeguards in certain areas.
