When are you going?  Winter there's lots of skiing, summer there's lakes, outdoor stuff, etc.

If you go north on the 91, you can work your way to Stowe, VT where they have the Ben & Jerry's factory.  You can do the tour there. Stowe itself is a cool town to visit and they have a ski resort (which has summer activities such as a gondola, zip tour and "tree top" adventure (see http://www.stowe.com/).  Then you can work your way over to Maine through the White Mountains  where there are more activities such as that available as well...

(you could also do the Vermont Teddy Bear tour as well in Burlington if that is of interest)

It might be a bit of a tourist-trap, but the city of Salem (Massachusetts), just north of Boston could be of interest, especially with teen girls. There are a few museums, some really oriented towards the grim history of the town and really help understand the context of the witch trials. And there are some tacky ones like Frankenstein and anything Halloween related. It's a nice little town, with historic buildings, including the oldest candy company in America Ye Olde Pepper Company. Driving north from there up to Portsmouth (New Hampshire), you'll have a great view over the ocean and beaches. Portsmouth itself is a nice town to wander around for a short time. If your girls are into that kind of thing, you can also visit a submarine inside and out (and try all the bunk beds if you will): the Albacore Museum.
