If you want to stay somewhere inexpensive Hotel Tara Palace is great! Near a metro, in the Chandni Chowk area. Its small, but quaint and has the basics, AC! whch is important after sightseeing all day, it is very clean and offers free breakfast as well as free airport pick up, that's a must have if this is your first trip to New Delhi. Chandni Chowk
If price isn't a concern, then stay in CP, (Connaught Place) at the Shangri-La's - Eros Hotel. Nice pool, hot tub, health club/spa, bar, modern decor, AC, and free wifi. It's in the middle of some of the best sights and shopping. CP has a few of my favorite shops in Delhi. Also free parking if you are brave enough to rent a car! Connaught Place

Our favorite area to stay in Delhi is Hauz Khas Village The following article on The Guardian gives a good insight into the area: Hauz Khas, New Delhi: the beating heart of creative India We have also stayed in Friends Colony, which is another quiet and leafy area in the sprawling Indian capital, not far from the main attractions. Check out The Manor. We have wonderful memories from this particular hotel.

If you are looking for a great local experience then I would suggest you take a hotel in Paharganj as al of the old Delhi is in and around this area.. There are also good options in and around Connaught Place a bit on the higher side though. Otherwise stay in south Delhi if you want to see the modern city. anywhere like Greater Kailash and around should serve you well.
Cheers
