New Delhi

What's the best neighborhood in New Delhi for a first time visitor?

I've never been to New Delhi and I'm a little overwhelmed by all the hotel options. I'd like to stay in a hotel that is central and gives me good sense of what New Delhi is like. I'd love to know where locals tell their friends to stay when they visit, and why those areas and hotels are special. thanks!

You will get lots of hotels when you will check out the New Delhi railway station. They are very good hotels, good service, less expensive as well
and if you want to stay at 5 star hotel. I'll ask you to stay at The Oberoi Hotel or Le Méridien or Crowne Plaza New Delhi Rohini.

I would recommend Connaught Place Khan Market University Enclave(This is where Delhi University's kids stay) or Hauz khas village. It all depends on your budget. If you want really cheap then try paharganj though it wouldn't be my first option

We have been to Delhi twice and our favorite neighborhood is Hauz Khas, popular among young Delhiites. There are plenty of restaurants and trendy cafes to choose from, and quirky little shops selling local designer's clothes, jewels and other items.  In our last visit to Delhi (2014), we stayed at Amarya Villa, near Hauz Khaz Village, and loved every minute of our staying there. Super-friendly staff and beautifully appointed rooms. Another favorite hotel of ours is The Manor

Hi Katie,

Having studied and worked in Delhi for a few years, explored it as a tourist, lived as a resident and still visit once or twice a year, I'd suggest the South of Delhi, the best place being Greater Kailash and it's surrounding areas. You will find a lot of good 5 Star hotels, if you're not keen on using www.airbnb.com, in the surrounding areas of East of KailashNehru PlaceMalviya NagarPanchsheel Park. On the fringes of South Delhi is my favourite place and a must visit for everyone, Dilli Haat. Some of the best restaurants and boutique stores can be found in the hip and bohemian Hauz khas village which, too, is in South Delhi. One of the most peaceful places in a busy and noisy city like New Delhi is the Temple of the Persian Bahai Faith; Lotus Temple. The area of Mehrauli and the Qutab Minar, and many other monuments are in the South Delhi and those in the centre of Delhi can be easily accessed while staying there. Last, but not the least, the Indira Gandhi International Airport is in South Delhi.

My personal favourite, when it comes to Hotels in New Delhi would have to be The Leela Palace

Please please do advise your Budget / catagory of Hotel  required _ else if you are proposed a priced hotel, it will spoil your budget.

Please advise the number of days.

Stay close to Metro station (if you are on Budget).

Rajiv Chowk(earlier Connaught Place) _ is the central-centre of Delhi. Move towards South and you are in better part of Delhi, Move toward west is the congested part of Delhi. Move towards east is congested again.

Regards

New Delhi is generally an unsafe place for women travelling alone. Especially at night. It has a lot of incidents of sexual harassment because a lot of frustrated people from the (backward & repressed) neighbouring states have come over to Delhi. South (New) Delhi is the best location in Delhi.

However, to stay, get a good hotel in South Delhi. Most of the best ones are already there. The area around India Gate should be safer because it is also closer to the parliament. Hotel Sangri-la is situated there, which is a good Hotel. Moreover, just be careful and don't trust strangers and let someone know of your wareabouts. Give someone access over your iPhone location using the FindMyFriends App. Don't be scared, just be careful.

Side Note: There is also an Old Delhi but usually when anyone says "Delhi" they mean New Delhi.
