Michelle from United States asked

Unique experience wanted at Napa or Sonoma Winery

My husband and I are traveling to Napa and Sonoma Sonoma and really want a unique experience at a winery in the regions. We have been before but really never had an amazing tour of a winery. We are definitely more into reds than whites. We appreciate suggestions.

Hi Michelle - for unique experiences in Napa with the following criteria, I'll just list two each - if you need more, let me know or if you have specific criteria on just about anything I can match Napa wineries with what you want.

Personalities:
Caldwell Vineyard Winery, John Caldwell
Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards, Todd Anderson

Impressive Properties:
Montagna Napa Valley (best to meet with owner Bob Long)
Constant-Diamond Mountain Vineyard (Freddy Constant passed early this year but his wife Mary still lives there and probably deciding what she wants to do with the property since Freddy used to handle all the hospitality)

Best in depth educational tours:
Hendry Winery, George Hendry
One Acre Napa - Yountville: David Becker

I've been fortunate to have visited and reviewed over 760 unique Napa wineries/producers over the past 8 or so years - which has given me a very unique perspective into the Napa wine scene - and these are just a few that jump out. You can check out my reviews if you google, 'napa wine project' or check out their individual websites/pricing to make sure they are a fit for what you are looking for. Hope this helps :)

My favorite vineyard was Robert Sinskey Vineyards. They have their own biodynamic gardens, and they pair food with wine. The tour starts with a tour of the garden, then the vineyard, then the tasting.

Make sure you go to Gott's Roadside@ too. It's a simple burger joint with amazing food.

For an exceptional tour try Del Dotto Vineyards & Caves. They sell exclusively through the winery so you wont find their wines in your local store. The tour starts with an education on wine aging and barrels then proceeds into the cave and barrel tastings. Great experience.

I agree with this recommendation. Del Dotto has two locations where they offer tastings. The barrel tasting option is a bit pricier, but the amount poured / tasted is known to be quite generous. Their reds are top notch.
