Jim asked

What are some of the hidden gems of Munich?

My wife and I, along with several friends, are going to Oktoberfest this year. Outside of beer tents and the list of top activities, what are some 'off the beaten path' things to do and places to eat?

Munich has a lot to offer. If you are a car fan you should check out BMW Welt and  BMW Museum. Its neat the Olympic Park. There you can enjoy a breathtaking view from the Tower.

If you like history, you should see the old town of munich. with the Neue Pinakothek and all the typical tourist attractions. Nymphenburg Palace is also very nice and has a beautiful park. If you like soccer you can visit the Allianz Arena. Make sure you book before you go there.

To get arround in munich is very easy. You can buy a day tourist ticket, which also gives you some perks and discounts at the main attractions of munich. Public transport is very good. There are subway, tram, busses which take you almost everywhere.

Food-wise i can recommend "Schnelle Liebe". They have the best burgers in town. But for typical german food try HofbräuhausAugustinerkeller or Löwenbräukeller.

But you will get all of them places on the Octoberfest too. This are the main brewerys of munich, but the also offer delicous food. During the Octoberfest you probably get an seat easier at the restaurants, because more people going to the fair. But i would recommend to get a reservation anyway.

Depending on the weather and your ability to travel outside of the city Nymphenburg Palace would be worth the trek. Also stopping by the BMW Museum is a must!

Those two are great places, but for some reason Nymphenburg Palace is located in a different place than is shown on the map to the right! It's actually to the west from the city centre in a huge park, you can't miss it when you look at a map of munich. It's easily accessible by public transport (no metro, but several trams and buses stop right in front). Definitely worth a visit!
