Visiting Neuschwanstein when traveling from Munich to Salzburg

I'll be visiting in May, arriving in Munich at midnight.  The next night we have a hotel in Salzburg and I would love to see Neuschwanstein castle during that day.  Is it possible?   We are two young adults and would be carrying luggage.

Yes, it's very possible.  There are plenty of trains from Munich's Hauptbahnhof to Fussen (about 10 miles from the castles) and plenty of shuttle buses from Fussen station to Schwangau.  From Schwangau's bus depot it's a short uphill hike to the castle sites.  When you're done with the castles, just make your way by bus back to Fussen and catch a train to Salzburg.  As far as timing goes, I'd recommend getting an early train out of Munich (the train to Fussen takes about 2-2.5 hours).  The train from Fussen to Salzburg takes longer - about 4.5 hours - so I'd recommend taking an afternoon or early evening train so you arrive in Salzburg at night, but not too late. That should leave you several hours to visit the castles.  If lines are long, then you might have to pick just one, in which case Neuschwanstein Castle is much more interesting to visit than Hohenschwangau.

You can stash your luggage in a locker at Fussen station whilst you visit the castles, or if they're full you can leave it at any of the hotels within blocks of the station for a small fee.

Thanks so much! Does it make sense to do a one way car rental and drive it myself?

Yes, if you're willing to spend the money. You'll get there faster, but fuel is much more expensive than in North America and you'll have to pay a penalty to drop off the car in a different city than you picked it up. You'll also have to pay a premium if you need an automatic - most European cars are manual and an automatic is a luxury add-on (the reverse being true in North America).

Unfortunately this is not quite possible,  Salzburg is in the South easterly direction from Munich while Neuschwanstein Castle is in the almost opposite direction more to the south west  You need a couple of days to make this possible
