Should we take a carseat on a plane to Munich?

We're going to Munich for a week at the end of June.  My granddaughter will be 9 months old.  Should we take a carseat with us for the plane trip?  That's the only time we'd use it, I think.  It's an overnight flight.  Any suggestions for helping her (us) endure the 9 hr. flight??!!

I have mixed feelings about flying with a carseat. Mostly, I hate lugging it around the airports along with whatever bags we already have. It is nice on a plane if there is an extra seat available to use it with. But if there are no seats, then you check it planeside which makes the whole thing a waste, especially if you aren't going to use it when you get there.

If your child sleeps well in the carseat, you have an available seat next to you, and you have a convenient place to leave it for the time you're in Munich, then it's probably worth it. Otherwise, it's just a hassle.

Our last trip to Germany, we had to check the carseat planeside and had to hold our one year old in our laps. It wasn't more miserable than trying to keep him from kicking the seat in front of him the whole plane ride back while he rode in his carseat in an available seat next to us.

In short, when it works, it's awesome. When it doesn't it's just another huge hassle. It depends on seat availability and the type of baby you have.

*We have found that gate attendants are very accommodating in trying to find us an extra seat.

Hi Pat, check with your airline first. Some airlines (e.g. Virgin) provide special seats for children and also if your airline comes equipped with airbags (again Virgin premium economy and first class) they may not allow you to use your car seat as it could be dangerous in the event of an airbag inflating.

I would definitely consider bringing the carseat if your child sleeps well in it. We took our daughter on a 9-hour flight to Germany, and she slept very well in her car seat (it wasn't foreign to her like the airplane seat would have been). We also bought this soft-sided tray: that wrapped around her carseat.  It was a lifesaver!  It was a clean way to give her snacks, and kept all of her activities and toys contained right on her lap.

We also bought this travel accessory strap that attaches the carseat to your rolling suitcase while walking through the airport, and it worked great too.  I'm sure there are other options out there, but we found this to work just fine:

Good luck and have a great trip!
