If you are arriving at the Munich International Airport, then you are going to be 40 kilometers from the central Marienplatz. If you are not going to collect your luggage (forwarded to your next flight?) then you might be able to have the time to grab a taxi and go downtown.

Lets say for the sake of discussion, that it will take an hour minimum to get from the airport to downtown Munich, and remember that Marienplatz is "pedestrians only", so the taxi will have to drop you off at the Karlsplatz side.

Arrange for the taxi to pick you up with time enough to get back to the airport, and then enjoy a stroll down Marienplatz, if the weather is cooperative, have a bit to eat at one of the sidewalk cafes near the Neues Rathaus and have a good German beer.

I would say that this is just about all the time you are going to have, because Munich traffic isn't good, and you are going to need to get back to the Airport in time to check into your next flight.

    Have a good time !

    Hi Brian,

There's a lot you can do in Munich with seven hours. However, the answer really depends on what you enjoy.

Do you like museums or art? Go to the Alte Pinakothek der Moderne. It' got Rubens up the wazoo. The Deutsches Museum is the Bavarian equivalent of the Smithstonian.

Architecture? Go down to the Marienplatz. The town hall is stunning, and the clock is the best free show in town. Church of Saint Johann Nepomuk is right downtown. It's a surprise and a delight for the eyes.

If you're into recent history, try the former Olympic Stadium and village. It's both impressive and poignant.

I usually recommend that people abstain from alcohol when flying, as it make it far easier to deal with the effects of jet-lag. However, it would be a shame to spend time in Munich and not stop in at one of it's one of the spectacular beer halls. Consider the Hofbräuhaus, the Paulaner Bräuhaus, the Weisses Brauhaus, and one of my favorites, Unions-Bräu-Haidhausen. They have coasters that have a woman riding a beer keg. What makes it really humorous is that the woman bares a resemblance to Gloria Steinem.

    Happy travels!

If you're into cars then definitely hit the BMW Museum. If you're into history then Dachau Concentration Camp is by far the most meaningful and compelling attraction in the area (and it's a great trip from the airport because it doesn't require transit through the city centre). If you're into art then the Pinakotheken museum complex (Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek and Pinakothek der Moderne) is a great way to kill half a day. Hofbräuhaus-Kunstmühle is touristy but one of those tourist traps that's actually quite worthwhile.
