The prices are dirt cheap, but the crowd is crazy. I'd recommend taking first class (Rs 100-150) if you're going anywhere on the train. And definitely avoid rush hour. Weekends are the best time to take the train.

Is Churchgate a station for both the metro and the railway?

No. Churchgate is the starting point for the Western Line of the railways. (There are 4 main lines -- Western, Central, Harbour and Trans-harbour. For the most part of travels in Mumbai, you can cover it through Western and Central). Andheri is the station on the Western Line where you can switch over to the metro. On the central line, you can switch to the metro from Ghatkopar.

It's extremely cheap! Mumbai local trains start with the minimum fare of Rs 5 for shorter journeys. You can buy return tickets too. There are some 2-day and 3-day travel-as-you-like tickets as well.

The Mumbai Metro starts from Rs 10 upto 40 for a single journey. Refer http://www.reliancemumbaimetro.com/fares.html

Mumbai trains are extremely crowded. Try the off-peak hours or the weekends, when they are slightly less crowded!
