I'm always searching for inspiring quotes that remind me of the importance of travel in my own life, and how travel makes the world more connected.
What are your all time favorite travel quotes that make you want to get out there and see the world?
"if you don't go, you won't know"
the man that rented us our 4x4 in the rainy season, in the Osa of costa rica
“There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.”
– Jack Kerouac
"Wherever you go, go with all your heart."
There's so many great travel quotes and I love to use them in the Style Moment posts on my blog, but I've always been inspired by this one from 19th century Spanish poet, María Rosalía Rita de Castro:
"I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel it."
I find most travel quotes entirely too pompous, like we're trying entirely too hard to sound reflective by recycling them. The guy who lays it all out with humor and perspective is Louis CK. He has a bit about air travel that sums up much of what I like about travel, and he absolutely slays the complainers in the process. I could pick from many of the lines in his bit, but this might be my favorite:
"You're sitting in a chair in the sky. You're like a Greek myth right now!"
Does it inspire me to somehow change the world? No. But it definitely inspires me to enjoy even what we consider the mundane part of travel ... just getting there.
"The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page."

“Often I feel I go to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am. There is no mystery about why this should be so. Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends, your daily routines, your refrigerator full of your food, your closet full of your clothes -- with all this taken away, you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience. That's not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating.” - Michael Crichton, Travels

There are so many travel quotes that I love. But here are some of the best ones:
If we were meant to stay in one place, we`d have roots instead of feet.
What is life without a little risk?
Die with memories, not dreams.

“Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a story teller.”

There are so many good ones!
"We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open." ~Jawaharlal Nehru
"There is a kind of magicness about going far away and then coming back all changed." ~ Kate Douglas Wiggin
"Wherever you go, go with all your heart."- Confuscius
"Hey, hey, easy kids. Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes...or perhaps you don't want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the earth, which is only four short hours away?"
Clark W. Griswold
National Lampoon's Vacation
"A man on foot, on horseback or on a bicycle will see more, feel more, enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourists can in a hundred miles." – Edward Abbey
In Keflavik airport, Iceland, there is a quote that says 'A traveller carries no bigger weight than wisdom'. I thought that was a fitting summary of how much life experience people can gain from travelling.
From one of my favorite travel articles I've read, written by Edward Readicker-Henderson:
Looking out from the tiny island of Ofu, the tag end of American Samoa, into the ocean where Apollo astronauts splashed down after a trip into the spheres of heaven, I realize maybe the truest thing Iʼve ever written is “Whoever created the world went to a lot of trouble. It would be downright rude not to go out and see as much of it as possible.”
'All good travelers are without fear and prejudice'
'There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars'
“A journey, after all, neither begins in the instant we set out, nor ends when we have reached our door step once again. It starts much earlier and is really never over, because the film of memory continues running on inside of us long after we have come to a physical standstill. Indeed, there exists something like a contagion of travel, and the disease is essentially incurable.” Ryszard Kapuściński 'Travels with Herodotus'
"Wherever you go, there you are"
Fairly tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, who was also a great traveler, said "To travel is to live" and I totally agree.
I know it is kind of over used/lame, but one of my favorite travel quotes is; "The journey is the destination". It seems to sum up how I travel and therefore the way I like to travel. Also I have a pair of Toms that have it on them that I wear a lot when I am traveling, so that helps to keep it in my mind.
“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks - on your body or on your heart - are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.”
“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” -Terry Pratchett
Oh man. There are so many! But this is my current favorite and I added it to my blog. :)
"To travel is to possess the world." - Burton Holmes
It's not how far you've traveled, it's what you brought back !
Travel is only thing you buy that makes you richer!
"You only get to see THIS Earth one time" - Jonny 5 of the flobots
"And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair” -- Khalil Gibran in The Prophet
"If my mind didn't wander my body wouldn't either" - Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes
"We have played along side millions of lovers, shared in the same shy sweetness of meeting, the distressful tears of farewell" - Rabindranath Tagore
"My sneakers were worn and my coat was thin, but my determination kept me warm within" -- Biz Markie
"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of humans experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."
-- Helen Keller
"I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides,I honor the place in you of love,of light,of truth,of peace. I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me,there is only one of us."-- Ram Dass' translation of 'Namaste' (remixing Crazy Horse's greeting into India's sense of universal Love).

learning or any other serious thing" ~ Aldo Leopold
"See Angkor and Die" Sir Arnold J. Toynbee
Not just Angkor but everywhere the great places located.
Once a year go someplace you've never been before.- Dalai Lama
I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list.-Susan Sontag
Be promiscuous and incoherent and intelligent, absorbent, happy: it's your great chance.
~ Henry James's travel advice
If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all
your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears.
~ Glenn Clark
For me it has come down to " to live is to travel, to travel is to learn how to live".
And recently an experienced wayfarer said to me: "the lesser you own the better you live on the road".
