Visiting a friend in Montreal for a weekend and we wanted to go on a little road trip outside of the city. Where would be the best places to explore? We're looking for a scenic, unique drive. No more than 4 hours outside of Montreal.
I'd say go to the Laurentian mountains (north-west), perhaps stopping in the cute Mont-Tremblant-Village, or east to the Eastern Townships (for example Magog and its lake). I don't know if you can go there through any scenic routes, but both these places are only 120-130 kms from Montreal along the main highways.
You could also go south into the state of Vermont which I hear is very beautiful with its fall foliage, but then you have to cross into the USA. It's still feasible as a day trip though. Just don't forget your passport!
