"Different" hotel on my way from Montreal to New York

Hello,

We (familly of 5) are landing at Pierre E. Trudeau Intl (Montreal), renting a car and travelling to NYC the next day.

I need to book a hotel somewhere not too far (like 1 or 2 hours max) from the airport. Somewhere in the direction of NYC maybe in Vermont, like in Plattsburg?

I would like to find a nice place, different from the chaine hotel. Not expensive, but not an airport hotel. Something with a soul.

Any suggestions?

This might be pushing it as it is a bit over 2 hrs, but The Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs. It has easy access off of RT87 (the main motoway to NYC from Northern NY State.) I stayed there about four years ago and I remember it being not that expensive. The hotel is quite old and historic.
