We are traveling to Mongolia in August via Russia, we arrive by train to Ulaanbaatar.
We have about 1 week to discover the country. Can you recommend a tour operator for a guided tour?
Also, what are the must-see's / must-do's in Mongolia?
How fun!! I spent 16 days in Mongolia in 2011. I'm guessing Ulaanbaatar has changed a lot since then.
If you possibly can, see if you can volunteer with Habitat for Humanity (Mongolia) for at least one day. That way you can see how people live and really interact with them. My trip was a Habitat trip and we got to know 4 families really well. That was wonderful.
I highly recommend going out of UB for several days and going to Turtle Rock (we rode horses there), and staying in a Ger. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorkhi-Terelj_National_Park
I also recommend going to the HUGE Ghingis statue out in the middle of nowhere. It was AMAZING! You can climb up into the head of the statue and see the panoramic views. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genghis_Khan_Equestrian_Statue
Another Must Do is the 13th Century National Park. Very interesting. http://www.panoramicjourneys.com/wp/index.php/13th-century-national-park/
In UB make sure you go see some Throat Singers. Incredible. Also go see a Traditional Dance show and a Traditional Costume/Dress show.
You'll have a very full week.
