If you travel near Monument Valley, I highly recommend taking a guided tour through the valley with Navajo guide. We just returned from a trip there and we stayed at The VIEW Hotel and Monument Valley Trading Post, which is in the park. We took a 3 hr afternoon tour with Monument Valley Safari. Duffy was our guide. You get to go off the beaten path. We even got to visit a hogan, with a young lady selling gifts. A beaded necklace was $20 (bargain). This tour was the highlight of our trip. We also stayed one night at the Cameron Trading Post (CTP). It is a great place to stay. There isn't much to do around Cameron, but if you need a place to stay, it is reasonably priced and has super accommodations. In addition, if you want authentic Navajo items like rugs or jewelry, hotel guests get 5-10% off gift shop items. We purchased several pieces of jewelry and a small rug (expensive) at CTP. I compared prices at other places, and CTP was the best deal. Hope this helps.
