Accommodations with character in Merida?

Hi, I'm looking to plan a winter getaway in Merida and need some updated hotel or apartment rental recommendations. I'll be traveling with my son (who will be almost 2) and my husband, and would love to be somewhere quiet that's not too far from the action.

In terms of hotels, budget really isn't an issue so much as character is -- we tend to stay in inns more than chains, and are always looking for local flavor and authenticity wherever we go.

I also know there are some beautiful vacation homes and apartments for rent in Merida, so if anyone has any firsthand experience staying in any, I'd love to know.

Thanks!

Hi Dorothy - jealous that you're visiting Merida! I've lived there previously and think about it often.

I'd recommend staying in either a) a centrally located boutique hotel, or b) a Hacienda outside the city. If you plan to spend most of your time exploring central Merida then go with option A, but if you're there for a mix of ruins/day trips, you can go either way.

Within Central Merida, check out  Hacienda XcanatúnHotel Casa San Angel and  Luz En Yucatan.

Outside the city, take a look at  Hacienda Teya and the Starwood properties (note: these are totally remote but beautiful):  Hacienda Temozon,  The Hacienda Santa Rosa and  Hacienda San Jose

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Hacienda Temozon (hotel)
  2. Hacienda Xcanatún (restaurant)
  3. Hotel Casa San Angel (hotel)
  4. Luz En Yucatan (hotel)
  5. Hacienda Teya (attraction)
  6. Hacienda San Jose (attraction)
  7. The Hacienda Santa Rosa (hotel)

Let's assume this is a stay for a few days.  The place I would recommend is Luz En Yucatan.  Always #1 or 2 on TripAdvisor.  Right next to Parque de Santa Lucía, just a couple blocks from the center of historic Merida.  I have also stayed in a property with several apartments in Progreso, about 30K from Merida, on the gulf.  Google Mar del Sol.

  1. Luz En Yucatan (hotel)
  2. Parque de Santa Lucía (attraction)
  3. Merida (city)
  4. Progreso (city)
