Road-trip around Melbourne: Grampians or Alpine National Park

We (couple mid 30) are planning a road trip around Melbourne in the last week of April. The Great Ocean Road is in the scheme of course, but we also like to do some hiking in the mountains. At first we were thinking about visiting the Grampians for a few days, but we have heard that a big part of the national park is damaged/not accessible because of last years forest fires. That is why we have also been looking at Alpine national park.

Who can advise us on the current situation in the Grampians, or give us more inspiration for an interesting route, maybe also visit Wilsons Promontory, or would that be too far? We have 6 days for the whole trip around Melbourne and are bringing a tent, so camping is an option, but b&b/hostel/hotel as well!

Parks Victoria is a great and check out Visit Victoria also

Walks in Grampians National Park (Grampian) and Halls Gap

Remember its autumn which means its not to hot. Be sure you go to local information centre before you hike as they will have latest updates on fire restrictions

Victoria is one of the most diverse parts of Australia and you will not be disappointed. Remember we have a lot of snakes  so be aware. Wilsons Promontory is another place to check out.
