If you have a car, here are some ideas:

  • Drive up to Haleakala - whether for the morning sunrise (need to wake up ~ 4 am, depending on where you're staying - worth it) - or just general hiking. there are even transplanted redwoods and views of other islands on some of the hikes
  • Drive the Road to Hana - starting just east of Paia; waterfalls, hikes, swimming, parks, views
  • Driving out to Lahaina, whether north from Kahului (careful: narrow road), or heading south from the airport
  • Lots of beaches on Southern Maui (you can enjoy some of the hotel's areas or go a bit further for public beaches), and killer waves on the North Coast near Haiku (Jaws)
  • Red Sand Beach in Hana

Have a blast - I'll actually be making my second trip to Maui around the same time you're there! On my list (that I haven't done yet): a longer hike around Haleakala, and checking out the Kipahulu National Park on the SE coast for more hiking!

Bonus tip: if you pay the minimal entrance fee to Haleakala or Kipahulu, you can use your pass at the other park (I believe it's good for 5 days).

Let me know if you have any questions!

Snorkeling on Maui is cheap, fun, and plentiful. Many good spots on the leeward side, from Kihei down to Makena. The longer way around to Hana is also a beautiful drive (highways 37/31/330), if you have the time. But check conditions first. A few weeks ago the road washed out in heavy rain, stranding me up there! I also second what Nathan said, the drive up to Haleakala for the sunrise is worth it.
