Anthony from Mulgrave, Victoria, Australia asked

Group of mates off to Malta for the 1st time. What to do & where to stay?

There will be 4 x 28-30 year old males traveling and we obviously wouldn't mind staying somewhere close to both decent night spots but also somewhere its easy to access cool/interesting day adventures.  Budget isn't really an issue, however the less we spend on accommodation the more we can splash on shopping, food and nightlife.  We are heading over in August 2015.

Hello Anthony,

First of all you must remember that Malta is in fact a tiny place, which makes touring the place a real pleasure.

Where to stay: I'd recommend on St Paul's Bay. It's a bit out of center BUT same time, it's a place with a lot going on in the evenings at nearby Paceville - the greatest concentration of clubs and pubs per km on the Island, especially during August. Very nice hotel there the The Westin Dragonara Resort, Malta - has pool + beach. Another center where you may want to stay if you are more into shopping is Sliema.

Local transportation is friendly and it will take you to most of the places you want to reach, although being 4 guys you may prefer renting a car. Mind you, there is no car theft on Island of Malta (...because it's an Island -:)

Places to visit: Valletta of course needs no special recommendation, of course you want to see it with it's beautiful churches (one off them oval!) Mdina, the most picturesque town on the Island, former Capital City, no cars allowed in Mdina unless you are one of the few privileged to actually live there... I'd recommend that you make this visit at twilight, then it's most beautiful + you can finish the visit with dinner on a cafe on the walls looking over the valleys. BUT! Before visiting Mdina, you have a chance to visit the near town of Rabat (Malta), especially the catacombes there! Although a bit spooky, quite unique.

Marsaxlokk A fishermen's village with a beautiful fishermen's market and freshest fish meals on the Island of course...

Zurrieq to visit the beautiful Blue Grotto. I'm not sure if this one doesn't beat the one in Capri... Make sure you have your swimming suits with you for a dip before/ after your lunch there :-)

One spot not to be missed the Meridiana Vineyard (Meridiana Wine Estate) beautiful place excellent for sampling and buying some nice wines, a unique and refreshing experience while in Malta.

The Island of Gozo is of course a must. The ferry ride there is quite short and nice (if you have a car you may of course take the car with you by ferry). Two point of interest not to be missed: Azure Window  for sight seeing, and the sweet bay of Xlendi where you can serve your lunch at a restaurant literally on the beach...

You should have no problem finding a cheap place to stay there. Try the Hotel Argento or the Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta. Both are excellent!

Thanks Janelle :) I'll definitely check out those two options :) Do you think its better to stay in a Hotel or Airbnb type apartment?
