We want to drive from Maine to San Antonio, TX

We hope to fly to Maine from San Antonio, drive back to San Antonio.  We want to go through Hayes, North Carolina.  We would like to avoid big cities and super highways. We love historical sights, reasonable bed and breakfast or lodging.

Maine (ME)

Tamiami Trail North 40 goes from Florida up to the top of Wisconsin. Then you can drive through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan into Canada and then Maine

They are going from Maine to Texas and not from Florida to Maine. Also the Tamiami Trail North is US Route 41 and not 40. Even numbers go east west, Odd numbered routes go north south

From Portland (Maine) for the first stop try Middlebury a nice little college town.  Then go to the Finger Lakes area of NY to Penn Yan Then down through the center of PA (avoiding all the east coast cities) to Lancaster (Pennsylvania)or Hershey PA.  Go west to Lexington (Virginia) (another little college town), and then go to Hayes You can safely take the coast road here US 17 to McClellanville or Georgetown (South Carolina)  Then unless you want to visit Charleston SC, cut over through Valdosta (avoiding Jacksonville) to one of the cities on the Florida Gulf Coast Panama City Beach or Pensacola or Destin.  Then through Mobile, Biloxi to New Iberia (Louisiana) and on to Conroe or Montgomery (Texas) and home to San Antonio
