If your interested in Hollywood you can drive there from the San Fernando Valley which is a short distance away. I've lived there and I would stay in Woodland Hills or Calabasas or even Agoura. These are nice areas, clean with restaurants and everything you would need. Staying away from the main city areas is a good thing. Try Hilton hotels in these areas or Marriott and Sharaton.

The last time we went to L.A. we stayed at the The Portofino Hotel & Marina in Redondo Beach.  It's about 15-20 minutes' drive south of LAX airport (if there's no traffic) and Redondo Beach is one of my favourite areas of L.A.  It feels like a small beach town that's far removed from the skyscrapers, noise and traffic of Los Angeles.  It's not that cheap but you can get a good deal if you book in advance.  Plus, it's only a 10-15 minute walk from Jus' Poke (an absolutely delicious hole-in-the-wall restaurant)!

Just a few blocks away from the famous corner of Hollywood and Vine, Mama Shelter Los Angeles is not only affordable, it's fabulous. It's the latest boutique hotel from the Trigiano family, who opened the first Mama Shelter in Paris in 2009, followed by 4 more in Europe, all designed by the renowned Phillippe Starck. In Los Angeles, an abandoned hotel from the 1920's has been brought back to life in a big way, with a DJ station and foosball table in the open-plan reception area / bar / restaurant, graffiti covered ceilings, and kitschy California decor. The reason such a cool hotel is affordable in LA? Because the owners don't want it to be exclusive to the wealthy - they want to attract a mixed clientele.  If you don't stay there, go for a drink just to see it!

See more info about Mama Shelter on my blog.

There are probably more glamorous places to stay but I would look into the Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel. It's cheap, clean and very close to a lot of landmarks--also, it's on a main bus thoroughfare which is not that common in L.A.
