book hotels before we go or when we arrive in places?

We are driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles in September. Should we book hotels before we leave or will be able to book as and when we arrive in places?

There are plenty of hotels on the way.  As long as you're not traveling during a holiday you should be fine. However, if you book before you go you can get more information about available properties.

this depends on how flexible you want to be. I usually only book the first hotel and the car and book something when i have an idea where i want to stay and when i dont want to drive anymore. i made the mistake of prebooking some places when i wanted to keep driving or when i didn’t want to go that far. i typically book after lunch via points directly with the hotel or for money via sites like hotwire or priceline to get a good deal and i am only staying a night. (the random hotel things)

I'd recommend you generally book ahead if you can. That gives you the most options to pick a place you like, and know that it's reserved. I booked ahead when I stayed in Monterey and Carmel By the Sea, and you'd probably want to book something in Morro Bay on the way down.
I used to use HotelTonight to book last minute hotels on the same day, but in general I'd probably only book on the same day if it's a bigger city where there are lots of hotels. If you're doing the coastal drive, I think you should book ahead to plan your trip.

  1. Monterey (city)
  2. Carmel By the Sea (city)
  3. Morro Bay (attraction)

Book your hotel before you arrive. If you arrive in Santa Monica but the hotel you decide to stay in is in Pasadena, you'll be in for a long tedious drive. Driving in LA is a chaotic and knowing a specific destination to leave your luggage (to deter theft) and to leave your car if necessary. Using rideshares in the city is much less stressful because parking can be difficult in most areas, especially for out of towners.
