Good, healthy eats in LA

LA has kind of a reputation for being pretty health conscious, so I'd love to check out some these healthy food spots.  What are some of the good ones?  Vegan, vegetarian, raw, gluten-free, juices, etc, I'm down to try them all!

I've been drinking a lot of cold pressed juice lately, and when people from out of town come see me they think its VERY California of me. The juice i'm liking right now comes from  Kreation Kafe. Santa Monica is their orginal location but they have a few around LA now. I go to the Manhattan Beach locations one downtown at Kreation Organic and North Manhattan at Kreation Organic. I drink the #3 green. It's not delicious (unless you like the taste of freshly cut grass), but healthy. They have plenty of really fruity, tasty ones too.

If your in Santa Monica you should check out True Food Kitchen, it's awesome. Have a juice and the kale salad. And if you want vegan, go to Real Food Daily. Their vegan tacos are great.

Mr. Wisdom Specialty Health Food Store & Hare Krishna Restaurant for some healthy LA eats and a shot of rejuvenating wheat grass.

Josie Restaurant has an uncomplicated menu with a healthy approach to eating, featuring an original melody of classic cuisine and comfort foods. The Pan Seared Duck with Savory Hawthorn Berry Sauce isn't something to pass up.

Stop by Planet Raw for their Alien's blood and Medicinal salad.  Their maca java shake is also insane.

I'm a vegetarian living on the east side of Los Angeles, and here's a list of some of my favorite spots:

  • Elf Cafe in Echo Park is a tiny little hippy dinner spot that has incredible, rich flavors and is one of my all time favorites
  • Right next door is  Mohawk Bend that has plenty of vegan options, like the buffalo cauliflower. The owner, Tony, also runs  Tony's Darts Away and  Golden Road Brewing which have great vegan options.
  • Sage Organic Vegan Bistro in Echo Park has great vegan meals (and ice cream!), try their brunch.
  • Flore Vegan Restaurant in Silver Lake is a place to sit on the sidewalk and absorb  Sunset Junction Neighborhood with a vegan rueben.
  • M Cafe De Chaya has great vegan/veg options, and is all macrobiotic!
  • Real Food Daily (a few locations) also does macro stuff and really well balanced vegetarian dishes
  • Doomies Home Cookin is on the other end of the spectrum and does great vegan junk food. Fried chicken and deep fried Oreos!
  • Cafe Gratitude (several locations) is where you can get a good hippy dish with a funny name
  • Shojin is an amazing veg/vegan sushi restaurant in a Little Tokyo mall. Be sure to stop for karaoke on your way out!
  • Veggie Grill is my all-time favorite chain restaurant. I bring meat eaters here who don't even know it's vegetarian some of the time. My favorite? The B-wing Salad.
  • Native Foods Restaurant (several locations) is another great all-vegetarian chain, and my favorite nachos (vs. Veggie Grill and Real Food Daily)
  • Astro Burgers has lots of veggie options! I love anywhere I can get a veggie BLT, though this is a bit fast food/junk foodie.
  • Orean The Health Express was an awesome vegetarian fast food place (with drive thru!) that I think recently closed down :(
  • Green Leaves Vegan is one of these places you'll see around town that has "Vegan" in the name, and basically does a bunch of Thai food with some vegetarian chicken wraps. These are fine, but not super high quality or healthy.
  • Follow Your Heart is a grocery store in the valley that also has a deli. Love their vegenaise!
  • Organix is a grocery store in my neighborhood of Eagle Rock that also has a vegan deli open for lunch.
  • Inn of the Seventh Ray is a beautiful spot up in Topanga Canyon by a creek that does a vegetarian buffet on weekends (and fish for a bit extra). Worth the trip!

In addition to  Crossroads Vegan we like  Urth Caffe or  Urth Caffe and  M Cafe De Chaya and have heard good things about  Cafe GratitudeVegan Glory (on Beverly Blvd) is a very casual but consistently good lunch spot. For juices/smoothies/etc we always go to  Earthbar in West Hollywood but they have locations everywhere. Enjoy!

Crossroads Vegan on 8284 Melrose by Chef Tal Ronnen is a must. You'll be surprised by how decadent vegan/plant-based food can taste yet it's healthy! This is plant-based cuisine at its best (and there's really nothing else like this yet, seriously!)

For salads, I agree with Johnny, Petros watermelon salad is out of this world. As is their normal house salad.
