I agree that using the train is the fastest way to travel between your cousin's place and Liverpool
Look at the official UK railway website for train times, details, fares and tickets (if you're in the UK or if your cousin can buy them for you).
https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
Depending on exactly where you're staying taking the coach (long-distance bus) might be an option. Coach travel is cheaper than train travel but takes longer. For locations, timetables, fares and tickets look at:
https://www.nationalexpress.com/en
and
https://uk.megabus.com/
Both types of public tranport are safe and comfortable enough.

Unless you have a desire to hire a car and drive, I would just use the train. Go onto trainline.com, put in your destinations and it will show you the available trains. You pay a small fee if you book through them, but it's convenient. Train fares (other than local trains) are dynamic, so the earlier you book the cheaper the ticket price. Most seats go on sale three/four months ahead.
