Chris from Boulder asked

What are the most affordable trains to ride from London to Edinburgh?

Hi Everyone!  I am planning a trip to Scotland and I think I will be flying into London for a day or two and then heading up to Edinburgh. Does anyone have any suggestions for what the cheapest train lines are to get up there? Thanks!!

London (United Kingdom)   Edinburgh (United Kingdom)

Flights are cheaper then the train, but http://www.redspottedhanky.com/ is another site you can use for rail. Book as far in advance as you can, for the cheapest tickets and to be able to reserve a seat. Otherwise 4/5 hours of standing with luggage!

There is also an overnight sleeper bus? https://uk.megabus.com/ for the cheapest rail and bus tickets but they only have limited number of tickets available for certain routes and times.

Have a look on thetrainline.com that's normally your best bet; if you really want to go cheap check out megabus, not a train but cheap; good luck

I have seen that sometimes air travel is cheaper or equal to train travel. You might want to consider air as well.

Have a look at the trainline.com but you need to book about 12 weeks in advance to get real savings

I booked my trains directly with East Coast Trains, the moment tickets were available for the dates I am travelling. While I also did use a railcard for reduced prices, on selected trains, fares were as low as £15, however those prices tend to go up during August.

Trainline has an app and is a very useful resource. The further ahead you book, generally the cheaper the price. Look into tourist passes like Railcards. Also, travelling outside of peak brings the price down dramatically. I never used http://uk.megabus.com/ - it seems super cheap but the experience could be as cheap as the ticket. Anywhere between $30 and $100 seems to be the quoted price for London - Edinburgh right now.
