Even though fall is off season, there's plenty to do, and it's less crowded which is always nice. You can get cheaper hotel rates, find parking easily, and get into great restaurants without a long wait. Eat at Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge. Check out the spawning salmon at Taylor Creek and walk along Rainbow Trail down into the Stream Profile Chamber. Just keep an eye out for bears! Take a side trip down to Hope Valley to see the changing colors of the trees. Go hiking up Maggies Peak for a great view of Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay. Or try Eagle Falls Loop. Bring a dog on the Shirley Canyon Trailhead. If you're a mountain biker, you can do the Tahoe Rim Trail around the lake. Enjoy the break from the normal crowds and relax at Sand Harbor. There should also be options for cruises on the lake.
